Why Eat-A-Bug?

As a way of raising awareness and funds for the South Carolina Make-A-Wish Foundation, Gregory Pest Solutions conducted a fun and wildly successful campaign at several regional trade shows this Spring and Summer. Throughout the Southeast, Gregory Pest Solutions has been able to engage consumers and businesses alike in “Eat-A-Bug” for charity resulting in thousands of dollars being raised to help grant wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation has been a charity with a long-standing connection to Gregory Pest Solutions. “We wanted to do something meaningful for one of our favorite charities,” said Tim Baumgarten, Director of Business Development for Gregory Pest Solutions. Phil Gregory, Chairman & CEO of Gregory Pest Solutions, who has been a long-standing, loyal contributor and supporter of its South Carolina chapter, added: “Make-A-Wish has done so much good for so many families in South Carolina. We wanted more people to be aware of the great work they do. And we want to support their efforts. We hope many more will participate in this fun event and eat a bug for charity!” Phil Gregory currently serves on the Board of Directors of Make-A-Wish South Carolina.

What exactly will I be eating?

Is eating a bug safe? Surprisingly, it is—at least the way they will be offered for this charity event this weekend. The products that Gregory will be using as part of the charity fund raiser are from actual food suppliers who specialize in edible insects that are prepared, inspected, and marketed under the same guidelines and governmental oversight as other commercial-grade food products U.S. families consume every day. Gregory Pest Solutions does not recommend that you eat bugs right out of nature, however. As strange as it sounds, it’s probably best to source your edible bugs from food suppliers with experience in proper insect preparation.

About Make-A-Wish® South Carolina

From the Mountains to the Hilton Head coastline, wish granting takes place throughout the state of South Carolina. Learn how Make-A-Wish® South Carolina is serving your community.

Incorporated in 1984, Make-A-Wish South Carolina is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to grant wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Make-A-Wish South Carolina got its start with the first wish on November 10, 1984 with a child named Louis.

Louis, age 5, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. His wish was to see “a big time football game”. He attended a home game at the Citadel in Charleston. He was presented with his own team uniform and was able to run out onto the field with the players. Louis watched the game not in the stands like the other fans, but on the benches with the players.

The chapter has granted 2000 wishes since Louis’ wish and continues to grant over 130 wishes throughout the state each year.
