Here at Gregory Pest Solutions, we like to make sure you and your family live in an environment safe from pests and the hazardous conditions they can cause. We also think it’s important to educate our customers on different types of pests so they know exactly what they’re up against when they call us. That being said, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has provided these facts about German Cockroaches.

Identification

The German cockroach is an average size of 1/2”– 5/8” long. These pests are oval in shape and are a light, brownish color with two dark, almost parallel stripes located on their backs. You can find these pests all over the United States and are the most common species of cockroach.

It is extremely important to keep these cockroaches out of your home because of the many diseases they carry. They are known to carry different types of bacteria, parasitic worms, and human pathogens. Studies have also shown that they can exacerbate allergic reactions and asthma attacks, especially in children.

Environment

These pests will feed on just about anything, including glue, soap, and cardboard. They like dark, warm and moist places close to a food supply, and are excellent at hitching a ride into your home through groceries, cardboard boxes, secondhand appliances, and around utility pipes coming into your home.

Prevention

To keep these pests away, it is important to seal around utility pipes, practice good sanitation, and keep a spotless kitchen. It is also a good idea to ventilate crawlspaces to prevent moisture buildup.
