Mosquitoes have run rampant this year! We’ve had to perform emergency Mosquito Services for the state of South Carolina several times this year due to the dangers mosquitoes have presented. One disease spread by mosquitoes is the Zika virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to one week. Most people don’t even know they have the virus and will not require hospitalization. Fatalities can occur, but those cases are extremely rare.
Once contracting the Zika virus, you will likely be protected from future infections. However, if a pregnant woman contracts the virus, it can then be transmitted to her unborn child which can result in serious birth defects.
Side effects of Zika virus as stated by CDC:
- Fever
- Rash
- Headache
- Joint pain
- Red eyes
- Muscle pain
Things you can do to prevent mosquitoes
- Drain any standing water in your backyard. Mosquitoes use standing water to lay their eggs and only need a half-inch of water to reproduce.
- Wear loose, long sleeve tops and long pants to protect your skin from this pesky insect’s bite.
- Use DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to keep the mosquitoes away.
- Ensure your home is protected by repairing any window screens and keeping doors shut to prevent insects from coming inside.
Mosquitoes can make an evening pool party a disaster. No one likes itchy bug bites, but they especially don’t like being exposed to diseases. Take a look at our mosquito services to protect your home and make your summer evening a success!
